    This is a vintage wooden ballot box with 42 handmade white and black voting marbles, (the white ones are glazed chinas/white benningtons and the black marbles are clays).  These boxes were used by fraternal organizations and such to conduct voting.  A white marble was a for 'for' and a black was 'against' hence the term 'black balled' for someone voted out of favor.
